Purpose profiles
A purpose profile takes the same panchanga, chandra bala and gochar readings used everywhere else and adds a small set of extra checks specific to one kind of undertaking — a journey, a signing, a wedding — on top of the general-purpose score, rather than replacing it.
The base reading, plus a purpose-specific layer
Every moment already carries a general score built from tithi, tara, chandra bala and the rest, useful for judging a moment with no undertaking in mind. Choosing a purpose adds bonus checks on top of that base score: extra points for the specific tithi classes, taras or transits the classical tradition associates with that kind of activity, and occasionally an extra restriction that the general score does not apply on its own.
Where a purpose's extra check would simply restate a fact the base score already counted — a favourable tara that both the general reading and a purpose both want to reward, say — the points move to the purpose-specific row instead of being added twice, so the same underlying fact is never counted on both layers at once. The fact still appears in full in the reading; only which row carries its points changes.
A few purposes bring in a requirement the general score never has. Travel needs a direction of travel to check against the weekday's classically forbidden compass direction (disha shool), and a medical or procedural purpose treats a Janma tara — mixed everywhere else — as a reason to set the moment aside rather than merely mark it down.
Direction and disha shool
Disha shool is a weekday-based rule specific to purposes that involve travel: each weekday classically has one compass direction considered inauspicious to set out toward, and travelling in that direction on that weekday is read as a penalty rather than an outright restriction — the classical literature pairs each such day with a remedy rather than a prohibition, and the reading follows that pattern by marking it down without ruling it out.
The undertakings a profile can be built for
The set of purposes reflects the categories the classical muhurta literature treats distinctly: focused mental effort such as an interview, exam or competition; travel; financial undertakings such as a signing, purchase or contract; a launch or new beginning, including a house-warming; a medical procedure; a marriage; and taking up a new duty or role. Each draws on a different combination of tithi classes, taras and gochar houses, matched to what the classical sources say favours that particular kind of undertaking.
