The rising sign at the chosen moment
Every moment, not just a birth, has a rising sign — the point of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon right then. The muhurta lagna reads that momentary ascendant the same way a natal chart reads a birth ascendant, and is the one panchanga-adjacent factor that needs a location to compute at all.
A second horoscope, cast for the moment itself
The ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at a given place and time, and it changes roughly every two hours as the earth turns. A birth chart fixes this once, at the moment of birth; the muhurta lagna instead recomputes it for whatever moment is being evaluated — an election candidate, or the instant the chart is being read for — using the exact same astronomical calculation.
Because the ascendant needs a specific place on the earth's surface to define an eastern horizon, the muhurta lagna cannot be read without a location: it is the one factor here that a location-less reading has to report as unavailable rather than computing.
The rising sign itself
The muhurta lagna's own sign — which of the twelve it is at the chosen moment — is the anchor the four rules below all measure from: "kendra from lagna" means houses one, four, seven and ten counting from whichever sign is rising, and "eighth from lagna" means the sign eight houses on from it, exactly as houses are always counted in whole-sign systems.
The lagna lord's dignity
Every sign has a ruling graha, and the rising sign's ruler is the "lagna lord" for that moment. Whether that lord is itself exalted, in its moolatrikona span, or in its own sign at the time is read as a mark of the moment's underlying strength; a debilitated lagna lord is read the opposite way, as weakening it.

Benefics in a kendra
A kendra — the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house from the lagna — is classically the strongest structural position a graha can occupy relative to the ascendant. When a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus or Mercury, and the Moon when waxing) sits in one of these four houses at the chosen moment, that is read as reinforcing the moment. When the lagna lord itself is the benefic in question and has already been counted under its own dignity, it is not counted a second time here — only additional benefics beyond the lord are read under this rule.

Natural benefics occupying a kendra (1/4/7/10) OR a trikona (1/5/9) from the muhurta lagna fortify the moment. Kalaprakasika p.21 corroborates both halves in one clause — "located in a quadrant or in a trine" — and gives them the same effect, so they carry the same weight here. The 5th and 9th were missing until; the rule was named for kendras alone and scored only kendras, which was under-implementation rather than error, but the name has been corrected along with the houses. NOT yet implemented: KP qualifies this with "a WELL-DIGNIFIED benefic", and no dignity condition is applied — flagged in TODO rather than assumed, since it would sharply narrow when the rule fires.
A malefic in the rising sign
A natural malefic (Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu or Ketu, and the Moon when waning) occupying the rising sign itself — the first house, where the moment's own identity sits — is read as an affliction on the moment.

This is a deliberately different count from chandrashtama: chandrashtama measures the transiting Moon against the birth chart's own Moon sign, while this rule measures the Moon against the eighth house from the moment's own rising sign.
